The Journey of Café De La’Sha: From Catering Business to Brick-and-Mortar Restaurant

The Truongs started their culinary journey as a catering business about five years ago. Kenny first experienced La’Sha’s family's Southern-style cooking and was deeply moved by the flavors and emotions it evoked. He described it as a significant impact, saying, "It was the first time Southern food touched me. I actually felt it emotionally."

La’Sha's upbringing and her family's farm in Arkansas played a significant role in her culinary skills. She learned how to make Southern cuisine from her mother and grandmother, who didn't write down every step but instead passed on their knowledge through actions in the kitchen. One of La’Sha's favorite dishes to make is fried green tomatoes, a recipe passed down by her grandmother.

Kenny, on the other hand, grew up working in his family's restaurant, Rice House. With La’Sha's recipes and Kenny's experience in the restaurant industry, they were a perfect match to operate their own establishment.

Server Shauna Scott highlighted the unique vibe that the restaurant brings to Florissant, stating that it stands out among other dining options in the area. Some of the most popular dishes among customers include meatloaf, shrimp and grits, and crawfish. Scott personally loves the turkey gumbo. Customers have the option to dine in or order takeout.

Café De La’Sha's popularity soared after being featured at various food festivals, including Taste of St. Louis and Taste of Ferguson. This led to the decision to turn their catering business into a brick-and-mortar restaurant. They wanted to reach a wider audience and provide a daily offering of their delicious food, especially since the closest similar option, Sweetie Pie's, had closed down.

Exciting Plans for Café De La’Sha: Expanding Hours and Festive Offerings

With their one-year anniversary approaching, the Truongs have exciting plans for Café De La’Sha. They aim to expand the restaurant's hours, create a more eclectic atmosphere, introduce Mardi Gras and Southern-themed cocktails, and continue participating in St. Louis-area food festivals.

To celebrate their anniversary, Café De La’Sha will offer specials and have a full bar available. Located at 119 Florissant Oak Shopping Plaza, the restaurant invites both locals and visitors to indulge in the flavors of New Orleans right in the heart of St. Louis.
