Despite the rainy weather, runners in East Texas showed their determination by participating in a 5K at Legacy Trail on Saturday morning. The event was part of the inaugural 'Winter Fest' held to support the Children's Miracle Network at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital. The day was filled with activities including a DJ, food truck, and various vendors, all aimed at raising funds for the network.

One of the 2016 Miracle Children, Luke Skinner, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, saying, 'Even though it's raining, they won't stop us. We still run.' Luke's sentiment echoed the spirit of resilience shared by all the participants.

The Winter Fest was a collaborative effort between the Children's Miracle Network, local gym F45, and coffee shop The Coco Bean. F45 Owner, Alex Ezelle, shared her motivation for getting involved, recalling a visit to the hospital where she witnessed the impact of the network's support. 'I got to walk through the hospital, and she pointed out all the equipment and things that they purchase for families in the hospital and to make you more comfortable. I knew that this event was what we were supposed to be doing,' said Ezelle.

The equipment provided by the network at CHRISTUS' Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has proven to be life-saving. Luke's mother, Katie Skinner, explained that her son was born nine weeks premature and credits the equipment with keeping him alive. She expressed her gratitude for the support received from the Children's Miracle Network, saying, 'The support we see people give for Children's Miracle Network, it brings tears to our eyes, honestly because they are supporting families that they might not even know. There are families who are going right now in an ICU, and they just don't know them, but they're being proactive and they're supporting, and it all stays right here, and it's local right here to families in East Texas, so just being here seeing the support is everything to us.'

Luke himself expressed his gratitude towards those who braved the rain to participate in the event, acknowledging that their support has been instrumental in his journey. 'If I didn't have the support, I wouldn't be here right now,' said Skinner.

The Winter Fest event proved to be a success, raising approximately $20,000 for the Children's Miracle Network. The collaboration between the network, F45, and The Coco Bean showcased the power of community support and highlighted the importance of providing necessary equipment and resources to families in need.

The organizers and participants of the Winter Fest event can take pride in their contribution to the Children's Miracle Network and the local community. Their dedication and determination in the face of inclement weather serve as a reminder of the resilience and compassion that can be found in East Texas.
