The Brighstone and District Horticultural Society Spring Show was a resounding success, bringing a burst of seasonal cheer to all who attended. Held at the Wilberforce Hall and Scout Hut in Brighstone, the show received an impressive number of entries, surpassing the committee's expectations.

With over 350 entries from 69 participants, this year's show saw a significant increase in entries compared to the previous year. The wide variety of classes included flower arrangements, potted plants, vegetables, floral art, cookery, beverages, photography, handicrafts, and even classes specifically for children.

To inject new life into the show and generate more interest, the organizing committee dedicated considerable time to revamping the spring schedule. They introduced several new classes, particularly in cookery, challenging participants to make dishes such as Bara Brith and a vegan tray bake. The floral art classes also saw some exciting additions, with two interpretative exhibit classes themed around Desert Island Discs and 'Eggstravaganza', resulting in creative and captivating entries.

Impressive Winners and Captivating Exhibits

Among the notable winners was Pat Wilson, who took home the prestigious Best in Show trophy and Handicraft Cup for her exquisite quilt. In the children's category, Holly Price secured the Children's Cup for her beautifully painted pebble with a spring theme. Sue Cox impressed the judges with her Desert Island Discs exhibit, earning her the Floral Art Cup for best exhibit in floral art.

Visitors to the show were treated to refreshments, and there were also opportunities to participate in a raffle and peruse a book stall. Quality plants were available for purchase, thanks to the presence of Bramley Plants, a local Sandown-based nursery.

The show also recognized the outstanding achievements of various participants with a range of trophies. Darren Everest received the Narcissi Bowl for the best daffodil exhibit, as well as the Centenary Cup for accumulating the most points in horticulture classes. Margaret McLaughlin claimed the Cookery Cup for scoring the most points in cookery classes, while Mike Roberts took home the Wine Salver for excelling in the wine classes. Steve Newberry's photography skills earned him the Society Shield for the best exhibit in photography.
