Join the first-ever Nellie Fest at Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park on April 7th to celebrate the life and music of jazz artist Nellie Lutcher. This free and open-to-the-public festival aims to honor the legendary jazz artist, who was born and raised in Lake Charles.

The festival, held in the historic Nellie Lutcher Cultural District, will feature live music performances, food trucks, vendors, and the unveiling of a stunning mural at the park. It's a momentous occasion for the city, as it marks the first official festival dedicated to Nellie Lutcher and the district.

Mayor Nic Hunter expressed his excitement about the festival, stating, "Ms. Lutcher had an incredible career as a Capitol Records artist. She is truly a Lake Charles legend, and it's only fitting that we honor her by bringing this brand-new festival into the community in which she was born."

Celebrating Nellie Lutcher's Legacy

Nellie Lutcher, a Lake Charles native, had a deep love for music from a young age. She grew up on Enterprise Boulevard and attended Second Ward School. Her musical journey began when she joined her father's band, the Southern Rhythm Boys, as a teenager. Eventually, she achieved great success and gained worldwide acclaim in Los Angeles.

In recognition of her contributions, the City of Lake Charles designated the Enterprise Boulevard area as the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Parkway in 2007. In 2015, it was further recognized as the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District, and in 2016, the State of Louisiana acknowledged it as a State Cultural District.

District B Councilwoman Luvertha August expressed her excitement about the festival, stating, "I remember the heyday of Enterprise Boulevard, and to activate the brand-new Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park with a music festival named after her, celebrating her legacy, is well deserved and very fitting. I hope that guests will come from near and far to be a part of this historical moment."

A Vibrant Festival Experience

The festival lineup includes performances by Jairus Daigle, Street Side Jazz Band, and a special performance by Leah Nicole, a stylist influenced by Nellie Lutcher's music. Additional performers will be added to complete the lineup, promising a diverse range of musical talents.

In addition to the live music, attendees can indulge in delicious offerings from food trucks and explore various vendors selling concessions and artisan items. Don't forget to bring your lawn chairs or blankets to fully enjoy the cultural experience.

Nellie Fest is sponsored by various individuals and organizations, including Mayor Nic Hunter, Retired State Senator Ronnie Johns, Mack's Barbershop, Senator Jeremy Stine, Everyday Shell, Carolyn Woosley and Joy Pace, Architect Jeff Kudla, Cox Law Firm, and Partners in Parks. Their support ensures a memorable event that celebrates the resilience, creativity, and vibrant soul of Lake Charles.
