The Origins of the Jojo Festival

The Ravenna Jo-Jo Festival was conceived by Jason "JJ" Marinin, a student in the civics class at Ravenna High School. Inspired by other food festivals in the area, Marinin wanted to celebrate the beloved jojo, a local favorite in Northeast Ohio. While jojos are commonly known in the region, Marinin realized that outside of Northeast Ohio, they are often referred to as "potato wedges."

The festival is organized by the civics class and Main Street Ravenna, with the support of the community. Marinin is excited to see the festival come together and hopes that people will enjoy themselves with their families. He believes that the jojo festival is a perfect fit for the community and is thrilled to see people appreciating it as much as he does.

A Delight for Jojo Lovers

Jojos, unlike regular potato wedges, are breaded using spiced flour similar to chicken, and then deep-fried to crispy perfection. They are typically served alongside chicken in Northeast Ohio and have become a local favorite. The founders of Fiesta Pizza and Chicken, Alfred Ajamie and Walter Abood, are credited with introducing jojos to the Akron area in the 1960s.

The festival has already generated interest from former Northeast Ohio residents who are excited to revisit this nostalgic treat. The organizers strategically chose the date to coincide with the end of the school year for high school seniors, allowing them to dismiss from school and head straight to the festival. Ravenna High School's prom is scheduled for the day after the festival, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Potato-Themed Activities for All Ages

Aside from indulging in jojos, festival-goers can also participate in various potato-themed activities. The Portage Metropolitan Housing Authority is sponsoring a dunk tank, where participants can throw potatoes to activate the tank. Other activities include potato sack races and potato art. The festival will also feature local talents such as Ravenna native Kendall Chalkwater and DJ Krooze and the Krew Way Experience.

The students involved in organizing the festival express their gratitude to Arasin Hughes, director of Main Street Ravenna, and teacher Matt Wunderle for their guidance throughout the planning process. They worked diligently to ensure the event's success and hope that it will encourage people to visit Ravenna more frequently for dining and shopping.

Celebrating Northeast Ohio's Food Culture

The Ravenna Jo-Jo Festival is a testament to the unique food culture in Northeast Ohio and the pride that the community takes in its local delicacies. With a range of jojo offerings and fun activities for all, the festival promises to be a delightful experience for attendees of all ages. Mark your calendars and get ready to savor the crispy goodness of jojos at the Ravenna Jo-Jo Festival this Friday!
