The Multicultural Center and Black Affairs Association recently hosted their annual Unity Fest, a vibrant celebration of diversity and cultural exchange. This lively event brings together students from various backgrounds to showcase the richness of their cultures through attire, music, dance, and food.

Nathnael Tadesse, the mentoring coordinator of the Multicultural Center, explained that the purpose of the event is to provide a platform for students and campus organizations to express their cultural ideas. The festival features a wide array of student groups, including the Asian American Student Association, ETSU Gospel, and the South Asian Student Organization.

Immersing in Cultural Delights

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., attendees have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the diverse cultures on display and sample a variety of delicious foods. The festival boasts a range of mouthwatering options, allowing visitors to experience the flavors of different cultures.

One booth, called 'Food in Appalachia,' showcases traditional Appalachian cuisine such as fried green tomatoes, spoon bread, and shoofly pie. Tracey Mitchell, the catering manager at ETSU, emphasizes the significance of this booth in showcasing the hardships faced by people in the Appalachian Mountains during the Great Depression.

Promoting Cultural Education and Inclusivity

Emily Baker, the vice president of the Asian American Student Association, highlights the association's commitment to promoting cultural education and inclusivity. The AASA welcomes all ETSU students, regardless of their race, and aims to provide opportunities for students to explore different Asian cultures.

Tadesse stresses the importance of fostering connections and knowledge among students about the various cultural groups on campus. Unity Fest serves as an annual reminder of the diverse community at ETSU and encourages students to embrace and appreciate different cultures.
