Organized by the Hereford Chess Club, the event attracted participants from various nearby towns including Leominster, Malvern, Worcester, and Abergavenny. Players from Hereford Cathedral School and members of the Hereford club also took part in the exciting competition.

The five-hour playing session held in the function room of the Herdsman Public House saw players of all ages and skill levels challenge the grandmaster. The youngest opponent was just eight years old, while the oldest participant was an impressive 86 years of age.
